Berwick Vs Keysborough

Well the weather was absolutely terrible again with wild winds and teaming rain but once again the Berwick supporters showed their true spirit with a great turnout.

Within 2 minutes Keysborough had scored the opener. A corner deflected to the number 10 sitting outside the box unmarked who cracked a beauty. To his credit Joel got a hand to the ball but just couldn’t push it around the post. 1-0 Keysborough.

This certainly inspired Keysborough and for the next 10 minutes they threw everything at Berwick. The defence however stood firm with only a couple of shaky moments for Joel. Then suddenly someone seemed to switch the light on for Berwick and it became one way traffic for the rest of the game. Shots were being hit wide, at the keeper and over the bar until Simon Mur who had made a great run bobbed up at the back post and put the ball past the keeper. At this stage Berwick and in these conditions were playing some fantastic football and it was only a matter of time until we scored again. This came from the boot of Tony Saunders. Saunders received the ball on the wing and went on a run which saw him turn 3-4 Keysborough players inside out with his shot ricocheting off another defender into the back of the net. Some brilliant ball play then saw the ball at Parkers feet who shrugged off 2 players and finished powerfully. Half Time scores 3-1 Berwick.

The second half saw us playing with the wind and the rain finally stopping. Dave Nastevski took a heavy Knock which resulted in the appearance of super sub Ryan Thomas. For such a small and young lad this boy shows no fear against anybody and his speed and passing game have troubled most defences this year. Frank Costa and Simon Kranz were making regular forays forward with Costa having a few shots at goal. At this stage Berwick seemed to be camped in Keysborough’s half and the goals should have been coming thick and fast. Ryan Thomas then got on the end of a goal mouth scramble and put away number 4. Everybody was now lining up shots and when the captain Elvin said this free kicks mine he calmly hit a cracker from 20 yards that gave the keeper no chance. Final score Berwick 5 Keysborough 1.

Although there were a few injuries and a couple of regulars missing this team did not disappoint the coaching staff and the supporters with its commitment and team play.
