Comets 2 v Morwell 0

The Comets went two points clear of there nearest rivals when they had a solid 2-0 victory over Morwell Pegasus at the Stadium last Saturday in the Vodaphone State League Division 2 (South East).

Top goalscorer Fikret Korkaric took his tally to 14 for the season when he scored two goals for the day. The first came in the 5th minute when latched on to a great free kick from Matt McDermott and angled the ball past Steve Byrne in the Morwell goal. This set the pattern for game and in the 26th minute the Morwell defence was caught napping when from a McDermott corner Korkaric was left unmarked and he nodded his second of the day from inside the six yard box.

The second half was not a great spectacle but the Comets welcomed back Steven Bellerini from a long term injury when he came on for Luke Ventieri who rolled his ankle. Bellerini was buzzing from his first touch. The Comets ran out easy winners and the only highlight of the second half was a blistering cross-come shot from best on ground Adam Rudski that brought out a brilliant finger tip save from the Morwell keeper Byrne.

Coach Dale White was pleased with the win and the return of Bellerini and along with new signing of defender Steve McPhilips means that competition for spots is increasing in the squad. Best on the day for the Comets was Adam Rudski, Stefan Rudski and Captain Dario Simunic.

The ressies got a badly needed win against a good Morwell team that had control of the game and were one nil up until Oscar Berbia got one back just after he came on and this changed the whole complex of the game and within five minutes the Comets took the lead when Seb Lorenzo slipped the ball into the net after some great work from Damian Najder. Daniel Castillo wrapped up the points close to the finish when from a Paul Deeley through ball he beat the offside trap and scored with a spectacular strike past Justin Kosakiewkz in the Morwell goal.

Next week the Comets are away to Dingley City who are coming off two losses and have dropped to mid table but Coach White knows how inconsistent the Comets are and sees every game as a danger game and will not let his players get complacent about their position in the league and in the team.
