Weekend Warriors
06 - July - 2005

Some big upsets occurred during the last week in football, none bigger than Bentleigh Greens defeating the then Vodafone Premier leaders Green Gully Cavaliers. Well done Greens! Can they do what they did last season and avoid relegation, when it looked impossible. Then you have former Premier League club Fitzroy City collecting a second win in the State League 2 South East over Dingley City and finally Diamond Valley United scoring five against Cranbourne Comets in the same division, two of those goals came in the first minute or so!

So it’s Heidelberg United on top! Well done to the Berger’s who have been competing in the State League 1 for the past two seasons, that after winning the Premier League in 2001. Heidelberg though has to travel to Green Gully Cavaliers, that will surely pull a large crowd. It will be a tough one to pick who will win the league even at this late stage of the league.

Langwarrin has finally been defeated since promoted to the State League 1 by Western Suburbs. Got to hand it to Langwarrin for what has been a very successful debut year so far. Kingston City though are in pole position to win promotion but will travel away to another ambitious club, that being Richmond City in the State League 1 match of the round. Kingston City followed Langwarrin from the State League 2 South East last season and this time have put together the right ingredients after a disastrous run in the State League 1 in 2002.

Waverley Wanderers and Clayton are known as fierce rivals even though they hardly have played each other. This is all to do with Carlson Reserve, the now home of Waverley, who took over from Clayton. Well they took to the field against each other last Saturday with the State League 3 South East top spot at stake. That match finished a draw to leave Waverley on top.

In the Women’s League only two teams remain undefeated, they are being State 2 South East club Seaford United and State League 3 South East club Monbulk. Monbulk deserve to be out of their division as they had not only just missed promotion in the last two seasons but for some bizarre reasons have watch clubs below them gain vacancies in divisions above them. Seaford United themselves are a club reborn after successfully gaining enough girls from local clubs including the Frankston Pines, who folded no thanks to that, and then took the Pines place in the State League 2 South East. In the end it looks like it was a wise move by the Football Federation to place Seaford in Division 2 as they in a position to win a place in the State League 1.

The photo shown has got to be the most disturbing one I have taken!
